Choose What Fits You.

After an evening, yesterday, of watching reads from actors, I feel grateful at the choices we have in front of us and we are now saddled with a responsibility. We had wonderful performances and a multitude of chemistries between actors that would each bring something special and a subtle message on their own. We stand at a place that some productions would be envious of. We have talent. Not just the shining stars but many shining stars to choose from.  Some of those shining stars we've already had to cut. Now how do we organize and make sure we pick the right pair?

I guess the first question that I have to ask (or remind) myself is: what is our responsibility with this show? One of the big themes, is love. Questions of: what does love mean to you? How does one express it? Is there a right or a wrong? We have a very particular stance on that and that is 'choose what fits you'.

Another question I have to ask myself is, what cultural lens is important to tell this story through?  Having our protagonist be a white woman born to her natural birth parents has a very different implication than a Latin woman raised in a Latin household or an Asian woman adopted to white parents...etc. While we have the show written a particular way, there are  other combinations on the table that might have interesting viewpoints that are important to tell.  It feels big.  How we cast this is important.

My own vision on what the show should look like it very particular, but I also have to remind myself that we're bringing together a hybrid of visions ( as that's what happens when you collaborate) and only part of my vision is going to show up in the end. Which parts can I let go of and which ones will I not compromise on?

Then there's 'business'. This is the part that I hate bringing into the creativity of making choices, but as a producer, these are things you must think about. If you want people to see your work, you have to cater to the desire of what is in demand.  What is Hulu looking for? What is Netflix looking for? What is Vimeo looking for? What is Amazon looking for? What do 'the people' thirst to see? These will ultimately guide our decisions as well.

There isn't a right answer. There are just answers and we're going to pick an amazing one.
